Theme by OPTIMUS
Tribute theme to all those old games that accompanied our childhood (or at least the childhood of “oldies” like me, but there’s also stuff for younger… :D).
In this theme, backgrounds are not so important because I wanted to emphasize the icons: they are the most important part.
To create them, I took characters, objects and other stuff from my vast collection of old games that made gaming entertainment history (well, not really ALL the games, otherwise I would have to make a 1GB theme, and the PS3 has just 70 icons… :P).
It was a very long and hard work, but also very funny because I had to play again all those games: I not only retrieved the characters etc, but I also had to work hard on them, resizing and redrawing pixel by pixel almost all the sprites according to their respective graphic resolutions due to the different consoles/computers from which they come (Atari-ST, Amiga, Master System, Genesis/Megadrive, NES, Super NES and so on…).
After that, I added a very slight 3D effect to intentionally create a contrast between old and new, so the sprites are still in a raw 2D bitmap, but enriched with a bit of “roundness”.
Probably, many will not understand my intentions (or the “spirit” of this theme) but it doesn’t matter: I wanted to do it and I did it.
Enjoy!

ya that sucks…no way around it really….except….not get GT5!!!!! i’ll have to put that red dead renovation theme on hold
lets just say im…re-imagining a post apocalyptic los vegas, and recreating it into a theme….to gain good karma! any ideas?
Sorry, Yogosan, I forgot your “misadventures”…
Anyway, guys… who spoke of YLOD?!?
Fortunately, I never had problems with that: my PS3 has always worked fine since the day I bought it (as I said, 3 years ago at day 1)
I just meant that I don’t have enough free space, so I’ll be forced to uninstall a lot of games, if I want to play GT5 in the best way…
Yep, I could change the HDD: in this case, I should make the back up of all data, but it would still be a problem because many of my games are copy-protected (damn you, EA and CAPCOM!!!)…
I have a 40 gb as well, over 2 years now. I put a 250 gb hdd in it though. C’mon GT5
infact my launch day ps3 got YLOD after an hour of powering up. of course the warranty had me covered on all of them. (all the YLOD ones anyway)
well 3 of my previous ps3’s got YLOD and i accidentally spilled budweiser in my 4th, (and in my 80GB ipod classic) so BOTH OF YOU, STOP COMPLAINING >:(
Yo optimus you know that I got the 40gb (the cursed one) so stop complaining >.<
lmao
it should still run fairly smoothly
Well, you have the new PS3 (lucky boy… :D)
I have the FAT bought at day 1 with just 60GB… SIGH!
i have plenty space for it. im still not sure what to do for the other icons for GT5 though, hopefully i’ll get some ideas soon
Damn, everything is happening to me!
The other day, I finally turned the ps3 on, but after more than a month of inactivity the joypad battery is totally gone: now, I’m forced to play with the usb cable connected!
Also, yesterday I had to do what I would NEVER wanted to do: I had to open the PS3 to clean and lubricate the Blu-ray drive which was no longer able to take or eject discs… SIGH!
Ok, I’ll wait for your themes, ESPECIALLY the GT5 theme (of which you showed me the preview)
Speaking of GT5… have you heard? The game will have a minimum installation of about 256MB, but to get the best experience, it will obviously require a full installation of… 10GB! O_o
Now, I have to uninstall at least 3 or 4 games! SOB…
ok, iv uploaded the mgs4 theme, i’m updating some of my older themes, and i’m currently overhauling my red dead theme, getting rid of some of the generic and crappy icons from before, i’m making a red version also, it looks way better than the last one i did.
Weeeeeeeeeell, thats the bad news. :b lol just kidding, dont worry i won’t kidnap anyone
as long as you’re not planning some kind of hostage situation, im all for it
Yogo i can’t really explain, i’m not sure about the date they release the details i need!
Well, guys, I normally use Internet Explorer without problems…
Hey Dahl! At least you finally decided…
@ f-rott, i always use firefox aswell but it keeps crashing while loading. im lucky to make it passed google. i’ll have to sort it out, internet explorer is very awkward and slow in comparison
a year? why a year if you dont mind me asking. i could die of liver failure by then
Ok i have this hugely geeky idea for a theme, but it’s only gonne be possible to make in about half a year to a year if not more, just wanted to let you guys know! :b
I always use Firefox. I only have Internet Explorer installed because it was there when I first booted up my laptop.
The verification code is there for me.
I’m about ready to upload this damn Mortal Kombat 3 theme I’ve been working on for like, EVER. Keep taking breaks. Watched Empire Strikes Back last night and decided to make an original trilogy theme based on posters, so that delays the MK3 theme even more.
Ah well.
Yeah google chrome works…well for me.
Google Chrome works fine?
Hey, wait! I checked again and the code has just reappeared, but this time I was logged in…
Maybe we must be logged in (as for comments) to upload themes.
Hey, where were you, guys?
Holy shit! I confirm. Something’s wrong: there’s no verification code! And I think it will take a while to solve this problem, ’cause I’ve the impression the mods are on vacation…
I uploaded a theme yesterday fine with Google Chrome.
crap, on my ps3 its blank, but when i pressed the upload button the CAPTCHA appearead, oh well, i’ll upload it tomorrow! i added sounds by the way
erm… i tried uploading the mgs4 theme yesterday, but firefox keeps crashing on me, so,im using internet explorer which seems to be running fine, but in the upload page, the verification code wont show up, is it internet explorer fucking up, or is there a problem with the site, can anyone confirm please? i presume its internet explorer, and a quick google search doesnt seem to have any solutions.
Nice theme OPTIMUS. i always like your themes and Yogosan’s. Original work to remember those golden years of gaming
Looooool!!! I thought it was a turn of phrase (such as slang) to mean something…

No, no… your english is ok!
Yes, that’s the game!
(but the version in the video you’ve linked is really scarce: it’s not the Atari-ST version… maybe C64)
Wow! That game was great: I spent tons of hours and days (and maybe years :D) on it!
And in Test Drive II The Duel, there were also new cars and sceneries.
Oh I meant a rear-view mirror -_- my english suck, sorry…
Yes I was right: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fif3mb3TkKc
Whaaat…? O_o
Yeah I think I did, don’t remember well. But I think there was a glassbar inside the car and that was amazing back in the days!
So, go to play it! What the hell are you waiting for?!?
Yes, the Megadrive pad was (and is) very functional and comfortable, I find (although it was bad for certain games…)
Hey! Have you ever played the very first Test Drive???
Yes I just checked a video on youtube!
damn I thougt that was uglier than that! Makes me want to play it!
Oh the mega drive pad –> the best ever made homie!
Oh yeah! I remember: the Konix Navigator! It had a handle like a gun with a trigger behind! My cousin had one. If I remember correctly, there were also Megablaster and Predator versions.
Yep! With the ST, Atari had also set the “9 pin socket” standard, which then was used for the consoles of that period, so that it was possible to use the Atari joystick on other consoles, as well as the joypad of other consoles on the Atari: in fact, after having destroyed my two joysticks (damn you, Street Fighter! :P) I always used the Megadrive’s control pad (and I still use it…)
And yeah, there’s no doubt: the game you’re talking about is BUGGY BOY! It was very addictive! WOOOOoooooot!
Ah I can see that! Mines were pretty cool:
http://img832.imageshack.us/img832/6488/joystickkonix.jpg
You can’t see that in the picture but there’s also a blue trigger behind…
As you can see the plug is the same than many engine, so you can use it on your master system or genesis… Sadly there’s not enough buttons! xD
I don’t remember the name of the buggy game but what I do know is that you have to hit a soccer ball sometimes that was fun!
I remember the noise! WOOOOoooooot!
Thanks, bro…!
Oh, yeah! The 1040STf had 1MB and an integrated floppy drive.
What machines! While the Amiga had only 256K, the Atari already had 520 or 1040K AND a “S”ixteen “T”hirtytwo chip system, plus the integrated floppy drive (“f”).
Mine is a 520ST which then I upgraded to 1040 in 1987.
As for the joystick… aaaawwww! I had 2 joysticks: the first was totally black, with two red buttons placed on the base of it and a red ball on top of the stick (really hideous :P);
the second was black (the base) and red (the whole stick) with just one red button on the base, a white button on top of the stick and a black switch (for the auto fire) placed on the rear side of the base. Its look was horrible too, but still better than the other one, anyway…
However, both were destroyed playing Street Fighter 1 and 2
Yep! I remember that “buggy” game: the title was right BUGGY BOY.
Ah hell no don’t worry this theme already entered the legend!
I had a Atari 1040STf I remember playin arkanoid, a “buggy” game, street fighter 2… and oh so many others… I had the black and blue joystick if you know what I mean ^^ like everybody back in the dayz…
Yep! There was an Atari-ST version for almost all games on the market…
The Atari-ST was my first home computer: released in 1985, it was the most performant computer existing in that period. Then came the Amiga, and the first real gaming entertainment war in history began…
Actually, I have a version of every game for each console/computer I own, but to make this theme, I obviously choosen the better version of every game.
Aaaah, Strider… I still remember the opening phrase: “who dares fight me!?”
Damn! The dream is about to die: I see that new themes are coming…
AH yes strider I forgot to mention that! I didn’t know there was an atari ST version though!
Ok, guys! Maybe you’re no more interested in this, but… since there’s no one else who’s trying to guess the games depicted in this theme, here is a complete list of them (for nostalgic only :P):

I wanted to remember the good old days…

Thanks a lot, F-Rott!
GREAT JOB OPTIMUS! It’s a pretty cool idea you got here!

Thanks a lot, AdyP! I’m really glad you like it!
Yep, I worked veeeery hard on it.
And now, knowledge will be passed on to your son as a… GAMING LEGACY
Don’t worry, bro: even I cannot really remember ALL the games I own and I played in my life…
Oh yeah, when it comes to videogames, almost all parents always seem worried about the health of their children, but actually they’re thinking about school performance…

However, we can say that you combined business with pleasure, and you graduated: HAH! And they say that videogames are bad…
WOW!……………Absolutely fantastic theme, one that I can totally relate to as I’m an oldie aswell…………….
not that I was a massive gamer in those days, but I remember many of the characters.
The amount of work that has gone into it is very impressive. You must be very pleased OPTIMUS.
Now I’m going to try and explain to my 16 year old son what games the characters are from…………………
5/5 without a doubt!
Lol i know i;ve heard of Golden Axe but i honestly can’t remember if i’ve played it or not. I’ve played so many game’s i can’t remember all of em’…
My parents shared that video games is somewhat harmful view but as long as I got good grades they didn’t really seem to care. Pong, believe it or not I didn’t start playing that until my freshman year of college in 2002. I had always had access to it but I just never played it really until a roommate of mine and I got into some strange power struggle in it.
Looking back on it I only got good grades to continue gaming. Well you are talking to a guy who only graduated from college because he honestly had nothing better to do.
I’m glad you’re one of those who likes this theme, so… thanks to you, Biison!
